How to clean an ATV Any vehicle that goes off-roading is bound to get dirty. Of course, that’s all part of the joy of riding powersports vehicles: you get to coast through mud puddles and glide over dusty trails. But once you’re through with a season’s worth of riding, you’ll undoubtedly notice that your machine is absolutely caked with mud and it might even be impossible to tell what color it is under all the dirt!

A thorough cleaning of your ATV once or twice a year (more often if you ride in very dirty conditions frequently) will not only make your ATV look better, but it will also help it perform better. By preventing mud from clogging up engine components, you’ll get more use out of your vehicle. You can also more easily tell if something needs to be repaired if your ATV is clean. Maxey’s Motorsports is your Oklahoma City ATV dealer. Here are the steps you’ll want to take to get your ATV clean and ready for your next off-roading adventure.

1. Locate a Cleaning Space & Gather Supplies

You’ll want to clean your ATV in a flat, even area that has good drainage, like a gravel or concrete driveway. Don’t wash your ATV on your lawn; the foreign plant matter could take root as weeds and the soap and oil residue can kill your grass. Rinse as much of the water run-off down the sewer as possible.

Gather up the supplies you’ll need, including a source of clean water like a garden hose, some buckets, an ATV-friendly soap (car-wash soap is fine), a plastic polish, a tire polish, chamois cloths, a degreasing agent, sponges, a plastic mud scraper, a hard-bristle brush and anything else you think might be useful to clean your particular ATV. A pressure washer and an air compressor can be handy for rinsing and drying, but you don’t need them.

2. Pre-Soak & Scrape The Mud

Use your hose with a nozzle (or pressure washer, if you have one) to thoroughly soak your ATV so that you can get the mud wet enough to loosen it. You can let it sit for fifteen minutes or so, then take your plastic mud scraper to the big chunks of mud. This will ensure you don’t have to do as much heavy scrubbing by hand. The more grime you can get off with the hose or pressure washer, the better.

3. Scrub With Soap

Now you can get a bucket of water and add your soap and start scrubbing your ATV from top to bottom. Use a hard-bristle brush to get into nooks and crannies. If you find there’s a lot of oil mixed into the dirt, spray degreaser on those problem areas and let it soak before you rinse it away. Empty your bucket regularly and refill it with clean, soapy water so that you’re not scrubbing dirt back into your ATV.

4. Rinse & Dry

Once you’ve given your ATV a good scrub, it’s time to use your hose or pressure-washer to blast away all that dirt, oil and soapy water. You can then allow your ATV to dry in the sun or you can towel it off in your garage. If you have an air compressor, you can use it to blast away water from every nook and cranny to prevent rust and save yourself some time, but this isn’t necessary.

5. Apply Some Polish

One final step that isn’t necessary is to apply some wax or polish to your ATV’s plastic to make it look shiny and new again. Use a polish designed for your ATV’s exterior and a soft chamois cloth to buff it in. Avoid getting polish on the seat so that it doesn’t become slippery and dangerous. You can even apply a tire polish to your wheels to get them looking good as new once again!
